In the educational setting, adapted physical education uses small group, individualized instruction or adapted physical education services within the regular physical education class to promote skill development and to improve the ability of the student to function within the regular physical education class.
Areas addressed by the adapted physical education teacher include the following Gross Motor Skills:
Locomotor, Perceptual Motor, Body Management, Bilateral Coordination and Motor Planning Skills

Locomotor, Perceptual Motor, Body Management, Bilateral Coordination and Motor Planning Skills
- Locomotor Skills refer to those skills that take a person from one place to another.
- Perceptual Motor assesses one's ability to move an object (eye-hand and eye-foot coordination).
- Body Management refers to skills necessary to move one's body in space and body-space awareness as well as balance and agility tasks.
- Bilateral Coordination refers to one's ability to perform movements with both sides of the body.
Basic tools of engagement in adapted physical education:
- Generalized strategies and group activities
- Innovative learning experiences and activities to meet the needs of all students
- All skills demonstrated (previewed), broken down into small components and repeated (reviewed).
- Accommodations provided to insure safety, enjoyment and success during regular physical education class.
