Sample PE Rubrics

At Broadmeadow, students are assessed on various skills throughout the school year.  Students are assessed on a scale of 1-4, where each number equates to a different level of skill.  Please take a look at some of the sample rubrics below.

Grade 1 - Personal and Social Responsibility Rubric

4 - Student consistently exhibits safe working behaviors (proper response to stop and start signals, whole body listening, proper use and care of equipment); needs zero teacher reminders.

3 - Student usually exhibits safe working behaviors (proper response to stop and start signals, whole body listening, proper use and care of equipment); needs minimal teacher reminders.

2 - Student occasionally exhibits safe working behaviors (proper response to stop and start signals, whole body listening, proper use and care of equipment); needs multiple teacher reminders.

1- Student rarely/never
exhibits safe working behaviors (proper response to stop and start signals, whole body listening, proper use and care of equipment); needs frequent teacher reminders.


Grade 4 – Rubric for Dribbles a Ball with Hands While Avoiding a Defender and Maintaining Control

4 – Rajon Rondo Level!
Dribbler consistently dribbles in control against the defender, using a variety of hand, speed, level, pathway and direction changes while keeping his/her body in between the ball and the defender.

3 – Needham All-Star Level!
Dribbler usually dribbles in control against the defender, using some variety of hand, speed, level, pathway and direction changes while keeping his/her body in between the ball and the defender.

2 – Keep Practicing Level
Dribbler occasionally dribbles in control against the defender, using some hand, speed, level, pathway and direction changes while sometimes keeping his/her body in between the ball and the defender.

1 – Dribbling Distress – Call 911!
Dribbler never/rarely dribbles in control against the defender, with little hand, speed, level, pathway and direction changes while rarely keeping his/her body in between the ball and the defender.



Grade 5 – Rubric for Overhead Volley to a Partner using the Forearm Pass in a Modified Game

4 – Olympic Volleyer!
Student consistently overhead volleys the ball successfully to the target at a high level using all skill cues:  Quick feet (get under the ball), soft fingers, bend and extend with arms and legs, finish high.

3 – Needham All-Star!

Student usually overhead volleys the ball successfully to the target using most skill cues.

2 – Keep Practicing!

Student occasionally overhead volleys the ball successfully to the target using at least two skill cues.

1 – Overhead Oh No!
Student rarely or never overhead volleys the ball successfully to the target using less than two skill cues.
